About ChatGPT Alternative
ChatGPT Alternative is an independent editorial site about AI assistants and language models. We answer one recurring question — “what should I use instead of (or alongside) ChatGPT?” — with practical, vendor-neutral comparisons and plain-English picking advice.
We are not affiliated with OpenAI or with any AI vendor. Not with Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Mistral, Perplexity, or anyone else whose products we cover. “ChatGPT” is a trademark of OpenAI; we use the name only to describe what the products are and how they compare. Nobody pays for placement here, there are no affiliate links, and no ranking is sponsored.
What we cover
- Hosted assistants: Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, and other chat-based AI products, compared against ChatGPT and against each other.
- Open-weight models: families like Llama and Mistral — what “open weights” actually means, and when it matters to you.
- Local and self-hosted setups: running models on your own hardware, and the honest costs and limits of doing so.
- Decision guides: which tool fits which job — writing, coding, research, privacy-sensitive work — rather than a single “best overall” verdict.
How we work
Everything on this site is original writing: our own analysis, our own words. We never republish another project’s documentation, README, or marketing copy. When we state a factual attribute — a pricing model, whether weights are open, a headline capability — we keep it short, factual, and attributed to the product it describes.
This field moves fast. Model versions, context windows, prices, and free tiers can change between the time we write and the time you read, so we hedge time-sensitive claims (“as of mid-2026”) and try to focus on differences that last: design philosophy, ecosystem, openness, and where each product’s incentives point. If something looks out of date, assume the vendor’s own site is right and we are behind.
We are also careful about fairness. Every product we cover is genuinely good at something. Our job is to tell you what, so you can spend your money and attention well — not to crown winners or dunk on losers.
